The Iowa Insurance Division (IID) has published a list of the complaints lodged by consumers against insurance companies in the year 2001.
The list breaks down the complaints into six categories: Private Passenger Automobile, Homeowners, Individual Health, Group Health and HMO’s, and gives comparative figures for 1999 and 2000.
The IID indicated that a “complaint” is a written expression of grievance against an insurance company. “The Insurance Division does not differentiate between justified and unjustified complaints”, and cautioned consumers ” not rely solely on these complaint ratios when buying insurance.”
The figures for Auto insurers found that Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company with a 0.231 ratio and State Farm with a 0.161 ratio had the least complaints compared to their premium volume in the state. Workmen’s Auto Insurance Company with a ratio of 1.554 and Dairyland Insurance Company with a 1.572 ratio were the highest.
State Farm was also the lowest in Homeowners complaints with a 0.339 ratio, while Farmers was the highest with a 1.438 ratio.
