Midwestern Congressmen are wasting no time in the joining the mad march to fill former House Majority Leader Rep. Tom Delay’s (R-Texas) spot since the announcement of his resignation.
Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Missouri), the GOP whip, who has served temporarily as a stand-in for Delay as he faced criminal charges, and Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) have both thrown their hats in the ring as competitors in the race. Both men are touting a lobbying a reform agenda they say they will introduce in the House.
Fighting to retain the GOP’s 10-year reign of power in the House, the congressmen admitted that recent scandels will present credibility and trust issues with constituents and in the House. The challenge from Democrats will come during the elections next fall.
In the meantime, House Speaker Rep. Dennis Hastart (R-Illinois) also joined the party, pledging swift action on proposals for extensive lobbying reform that would include stricter enforcement and penalities.
No details of the reform proposals from any of the congressmen have been released.
