Aviva USA Selects West Des Moines for New U.S. Heaquarters

August 31, 2007

Insurance and pension provider Aviva USA plans to build its new national headquarters in West Des Moines, Iowa, a project that will result in an investment of up to $150 million and 400 jobs, the company’s CEO said Wednesday.

Aviva USA, the U.S. unit of London-based Aviva PLC, Britain’s largest insurer, said it has purchased 71 acres to shift operations from the company’s three locations in downtown Des Moines to West Des Moines by early 2010.

The plan requires approval from state and local governments.

West Des Moines “best accommodates our business needs, provides flexibility to support our long-term growth plans, allows for increased operational efficiencies and is the most cost-effective solution,” said Thomas C. Godlasky, CEO of Aviva North America.

Construction on the 360,000-square-foot facility will likely begin later this year and be complete in late 2009 or early 2010.

In addition to Aviva’s three buildings in downtown Des Moines, the company has locations in Woodbury, N.Y.; Topeka, Kan.; Indianapolis; and Quincy, Mass.

Godlasky said the company looked at more than 25 sites in the Des Moines area and looked at other states.

The company has added 200 jobs in the past seven months and is expected to add 400 more over the next three years in the Des Moines area, Godlasky said.

West Des Moines Mayor Steven K. Gaer said the project will be a major boost to the city’s economy and tax base.

“Their decision will benefit the greater Des Moines community today and for years to come,” he said.

Michael Tramontina, Iowa’s economic development director, credited an available work force, favorable business climate and quality of life with helping to keep the company in Iowa.

“Iowa’s insurance industry continues to grow, creating high quality career opportunities for Iowa workers,” Tramontina said.

Aviva says it is the world’s fifth largest insurance group, based on gross worldwide premiums as of Dec. 31.

Aviva grew its existing U.S. presence last year by acquiring AmerUs Group.

Aviva USA had $38.4 billion in assets as of June 30.
