The Kansas state board that regulates doctors is having a special meeting to discuss legislators’ demands that it fire top staffers.
The Board of Healing Arts is facing pressure partly because of Stephen Schneider’s case.
He’s a Haysville physician who has been accused of running a “pill mill. His clinic has been linked by prosecutors to at least 56 overdose deaths. An administrative hearing officer suspended his license in January, a month after a federal grand jury indicted him on 34 criminal charges.
Legislators say the case shows persistent problems. They are targeting the board’s executive director and chief counsel.
But Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has said she has confidence in the board’s staff.
