South Dakota Insurance Agent Told to Stop Operating in North Dakota

North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Adam Hamm has issued a cease and desist order to Floyd Sheridan, a Baltic, S.D., insurance agent who is alleged to have sold, solicited or negotiated insurance to a Barnes County, N.D. resident.

The state’s insurance department says Sheridan is not licensed to sell insurance in North Dakota. The order bars him from engaging in the business of insurance until further notice.

“Agents selling insurance to North Dakota residents are required by law to be licensed through the North Dakota Insurance Department,” Hamm said.

Sheridan has a right to request an administrative hearing on the cease and desist order within 30 days of the date of the order.

“Consumers can search a list of licensed insurance agents and companies on our Web site, www.nd.gov/ndins, to find out if they are doing business with someone who has the appropriate qualifications,” Hamm said.

North Dakota consumers with questions about insurance policies through Sheridan or anyone with information relating to Sheridan’s selling insurance in North Dakota are encouraged to call the North Dakota Insurance Department at 1-800-247-0560.
