A study has concluded that Minot, N.D., has $1 billion in unmet needs as it continues to recover from historic Souris River flooding in 2011.
The Minot City Council spent $125,000 of federal grant money to commission the study. The city will use the results when requesting additional federal and state aid.
An unmet need is defined as any need for funding that remains after officials have tapped the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Small Business Administration, insurance and nonprofit agencies.
The study concluded that based on Minot’s current budget, it would take the city about 45 years to pay off the unmet needs on its own.
The Souris River flooded more than 4,000 homes and businesses in Minot in the summer of 2011.
