Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced a Johnson county man has been sentenced to 12 months of probation for insurance fraud.
Macario Butler, age 28, pleaded guilty on November 7, 2025 in Johnson County District Court to one misdemeanor count of insurance fraud and one count of attempted theft.
Butler attempted to reinstate his cancelled insurance policy to submit a claim for water damage. He fraudulently reported the date of loss as after the policy had been reinstated, when in actuality, the event occurred prior. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months probation with 30 days underlying jail time for insurance fraud and six months underlying jail time for attempted theft.
Butler was ordered to pay a $500 fine plus court costs.
“Insurance fraud costs all Kansans in the form of increased premiums every year,” Schmidt said. “The Department will continue pursuing penalties against anyone committing insurance fraud in Kansas.”
The Kansas Department of Insurance investigated this case which was prosecuted by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office.
