Gee and how much handwringing will go on next year when the new Michigan law allows helmet free riding for certain individuals?

The wearing or not wearing of the helmet is not the problem. As I rider, I can tell you the problem is the distracted drivers around you!

If the fatality level remained the same, it would seem that with more vehicles on the road, this could be good news of sorts.

Motorcycles have certain “safety” deficits built into them. They a very small compared to soccer mom piloted minivans and when a distracted car or truck driver knocks over a motorcycle, the cyclist comes out second best. When I ride motorcycle I am very aware of the risks and I stay alert. If I get run over, so be it.
Free men are free to risk their lives.

It’s the idiots on cell phones I worry about. They are everywhere.
