The Louisiana Medical Mutual Insurance Company (LAMMICO) Board of Directors elected Thomas H. Grimstad, M.D., as its new president and chief executive officer. Dr. Grimstad will succeed John E. Lemoine, M.D., effective Jan.1, 2008.
Since LAMMICO was founded in 1982, only three other physicians have led the Louisiana-based medical malpractice insurer, the company said. Prior to Dr. Lemoine, other leaders were Gerald R. LaNasa, M.D. and Robert L. di Benedetto, M.D. Dr. Lemoine will continue to serve LAMMICO as chairman of the Board, also effective on Jan. 1.
Dr. Grimstad has more than 30 years of experience in the medical industry; both as a practicing physician and LAMMICO staff employee. Prior to his hiring as LAMMICO’s senior vice president of Underwriting in 2005, Dr. Grimstad worked in the private medical practice of consultative pulmonary disease at the West Jefferson Medical Center from 1977 until 2005.
Dr. Grimstad also served as a member of LAMMICO’s Claims Committee which reviews information regarding malpractice claims made against LAMMICO insureds. He was also a member of the Risk Management Committee which reviews LAMMICO’s educational programs and provides feedback regarding physician perceptions of LAMMICO’s risk management activities.
Dr. Grimstad received a doctorate of medicine in 1973 from the Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He interned, completed a residency in internal medicine and served a fellowship in pulmonary disease at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
In addition to Louisiana, LAMMICO also provides medical professional liability insurance in Arkansas.
