IIAT Launches Certified Account Manager Development Program

April 22, 2010

The Independent Insurance Agents of Texas (IIAT) is launching a new educational program exclusively for Texas agents who want to go beyond the technical issues in their professional development.

The Certified Account Manager (CAM) program is designed to build confidence, improve communication and develop the industry and relationship skills needed for the challenges facing agency support staff with growing responsibilities. It will begin in June.

Paul Martin, IIAT’s director of Education, said the course was created after agencies expressed interest in a course to help their employees develop management skills.

Due to the economy and the prolonged soft market, agency personnel in many cases are being asked to take on management-type responsibilities, some of which they may not be entirely prepared for. They may be well-versed in the technical aspects of insurance, Martin told Insurance Journal, but aren’t confident about taking on leadership roles. The course is designed to help agency employees develop such skills.

The CAM curriculum, which is suitable for any specialty – personal lines, commercial lines or life and health – will be offered in five parts in a mix of classroom and short, online courses.

Elements of the curriculum include: Insurance Professional Skills Development; Professional Leadership and Relationship Development; Strategic Thinking and Workflow Management; Regulations, the Courts and the Effect on Customer Service; and Personal Development Online Courses.

No specific order of course completion is required, but successful completion of online examinations will be required to earn the CAM certification.
