Texas Workers’ Comp Division Approves 12 Companies to Self-Insure

The Texas Department of Insurance, Division of Workers’ Compensation (TDI-DWC) approved the renewals of the Certificates of Authority for 12 companies to self-insure their workers’ compensation claims for a one-year period under the TDI-DWC Self-Insurance Program. These 12 companies collectively employ approximately 20,700 employees in Texas.

Under Texas law, certain large, private companies can self-insure for workers’ compensation claims, while retaining the protection of the Texas Workers’ Compensation Act for the company and for its employees. To qualify, a company must have a minimum workers’ compensation insurance unmodified manual premium of $500,000 and meet other requirements subject to annual review.

The following companies received self-insurance certificates:

  • American Electric Power Company, Inc., Heath, Ohio
  • Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc., Kansas City, Kan.
  • E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, Wilmington, Del
  • Emerson Electric Co., St. Louis, Mo.
  • FedEx Freight, Inc., Harrison, Ark.
  • Guardian Industries Corp., Auburn Hills, Mich.
  • International Paper Company, Memphis, Tenn.
  • Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, Portland, Ore.
  • The Procter & Gamble Company, Cincinnati, Ohio
  • The Sherwin-Williams Company, Cleveland, Ohio
  • Unique Staff Leasing I, Ltd., Corpus Christi
  • VF Corporation, Greensboro, N.C.
