The private sector continued to lead non-seasonally adjusted nonfarm job growth in May for the state and in most of Louisiana’s metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs), the Louisiana Workforce Commission has reported.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) survey of Louisiana employers showed the state had an increase of 10,200 not seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs over the month, for a total of 1,914,600 in May and had an increase of 15,000 jobs from May 2010.
Private industry sectors gained 11,400 jobs over the month and 31,800 over the year, while government shed 16,800 jobs compared to May of last year. Almost half of this decline resulted from the release of temporary federal census workers.
Nonfarm employment gains by MSA for May in order of over-the-month growth were:
- Shreveport and Lafayette, up 1,400 nonfarm jobs each from April to May 2011.
- Lake Charles and New Orleans, up 1,300 jobs each.
- Houma, up 1,100 jobs.
- Baton Rouge, up 200 jobs.
- Alexandria, down 200 jobs.
- Monroe, down 800 jobs.
The New Orleans MSA added the most jobs over the year with an increase of 4,900 jobs, followed by the Shreveport MSA with an additional 4,800 jobs.
“May is the eighth month out of the past 10 that has shown over-the-month job gains in the not seasonally adjusted reports,” said Curt Eysink, LWC executive director. “We also followed the typical May pattern with our unemployment rates because of students and staff on summer break entering the labor force.”
Louisiana’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 8.1 percent in May. The U.S. rate remained at 8.7 percent. The unemployment rate is developed based on data gathered from a sample survey of residences by BLS.
The household survey estimates Louisiana’s civilian labor force – the number of people working or looking for work – increased 10,458 over the month to 2,057,702.
The not seasonally adjusted estimate shows the number of people employed in May was 1,891,296, down 5,038 from April.
The number of unemployed in May was 166,406, up 15,496 from April.
