A Hammond woman pleaded guilty to fraudulently obtaining nearly $8,000 in disaster assistance from the American Red Cross after Hurricane Katrina.
Thirty-year-old Tamara Morris faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine following her guilty plea Wednesday to mail fraud. Her sentencing by U.S. District Judge Stanwood Duval Jr. is set for Nov. 30.
Victims of the 2005 storm were eligible for one-time payments by the Red Cross of up to $1,565. Federal prosecutors say Morris obtained eight separate payments from the Red Cross and fraudulently obtained a total of $7,825.
