Officials: Louisiana Pump Station Work Will Help Protect From Floods

May 31, 2012

Lafourche Parish, La., officials say the repair of two pumping stations in the Raceland area will help protect against flooding.

The parish will be rebuilding the Cyprien Pump Station, which services the low-lying area south of La. Highway 1 and west of Highway 182. Work will also be done on the Crest Pump Station on Crest Road. That station serves the area bounded by U.S. Highway 90 and state highways 182 and 652.

According to the Courier, the combined cost of the two projects is $146,758.

Low-lying sections of Raceland have experienced severe flooding in the past during prolonged periods of rain.

More than 100 homes in the Alidore community in Raceland were damaged in December 2009 when more than 10 inches fell over two days.

The ground was already saturated because of a rain-filled month that broke records in parts of south Louisiana

Dupre Brothers Construction of Houma will rebuild the heavy support elements of the Cyprien Pumping station for $117,200. In addition, the Lafourche Parish Department of Public Works will rebuild the roof on the station and repair one of the three pumps there.

“Three temporary portable pumps, on loan from Plaquemines Parish, will be in place while the Cyprien station is undergoing reconstruction,” said Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph. “This precautionary plan is intended to provide protection until the station is back in service.”

Lafourche Parish Councilman John Arnold said rebuilding the pumping station is vital to help prevent flooding in the community during heavy rainfall.

“If we don’t have it, it’s not going to be able to pump out all that water during a traumatic rainstorm,” Arnold said. “It’s definitely critical to our drainage situation in Bayou Blue.”

The engineering study for the project was done by All South Consulting Engineers of Metairie. The bids for work on the pumping station were advertised in February and awarded in April.

Construction should be completed by June 15.
