Wells Fargo’s Student Insurance Division, part of Wells Fargo & Co., announced plans to expand its Play it Safe Concussion Care Program to schools throughout Texas.
The program improves identification and management of sports-related concussions and also provides student-athletes with increased access to local medical professionals trained in the evaluation and management of concussions through excess insurance coverage.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur in the United States each year. People ages 15 to 19 sustain more concussions than those in most other age groups, and concussions are more damaging to adolescent brains than to adult brains.
Wells Fargo first introduced the Play it Safe program in 2011, and today there are approximately 16,000 students currently participating. Health care providers, schools and their athletic programs, and families all play a role in promoting awareness and education on concussion care management.
The program includes ImPACT baseline neurocognitive testing and excess insurance coverage to protect the health and financial well-being of young athletes and their families. Through its screenings, the Play it Safe program, has already been able to identify more than 140 students with concussions, who were then provided access to proper treatment.
The Texas legislature is currently considering legislation that will help prevent and treat concussions in student athletes.
State Representative Eddie Lucio III recently introduced two separate bills that would limit high school and middle school football programs to one full contact practice per week and establish baseline testing to help determine when a student-athlete can return to play after suffering a concussion.
