Residents north of Thibodaux can expect better fire protection and lower insurance premiums with a new, 3,700-square-foot station being built along La. Highway 1.
The Daily Comet reports the Chackbay Volunteer Fire Department has owned the property for about a year and plans to start building early next year.
Fire Chief Chris Boudreaux says the station will cost between $500,000 and $700,000. The money will come from the department’s Louisiana Gumbo Festival and other fundraisers.
Boudreaux said building near Sugar Ridge will also help the department maintain or boost its rating with the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana, which ranks fire departments on factors such as response times. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the best, the Chackbay Volunteer Fire Department is a class 5.
