Texas Commissioner Emphasizes Growth, Modernization at Insurance Department

September 4, 2019

In a letter to stakeholders emphasizing improvements made by the Texas Department of Insurance, Commissioner Kent Sullivan said during the past 10 years there have been significant increases in the numbers of agents and adjusters licensed, customer help line calls and claims payments.

Sullivan said TDI is “focused on improvements at both the macro and micro levels. We want better systems and processes so we can improve the consumer experience.”

Recognizing that the insurance market in Texas is the second largest nationally and the eight largest globally, Sullivan said over the past decade the number of agent and adjuster licenses has increased by 76%, the number of help line calls has increased by 73% and there has been an 80% growth in claims payments made.

Sullivan said such growth has put pressure on the agency to “keep pace” and to modernize.

“It’s critically important that we use technology better and update our processes, but we must always be mindful of why those things are important. Answering calls faster, using artificial intelligence to help review policy language, improving our ability to analyze large amounts of data – all these modernization efforts are increasingly essential to allow us to regulate a market that is as large and complex as this one,” Sullivan said in the message posted on TDI’s website.

He welcomed ideas for ways TDI can continue to improve its services to stakeholders. Interested contributors may contact Sullivan at commissioner@tdi.texas.gov.
