Recent Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data show the incidence rate of work-related injuries and illnesses among Louisiana’s private sector employers was 1.7 incidents per 100 full-time equivalent (FTE) workers in 2019, compared with a reported 1.8 in 2018, according to the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC).
The state’s employer-reported injury and illness private sector incidence rate has been on a descending trend over the past 18 years.
The national private sector incidence rate was 2.8. in 2019. There were 24.1 thousand nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses reported in Louisiana by private industry employers in 2019, previously reported as 25.6 thousand in 2018. This data is an estimate from the Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses (SOII).
Louisiana’s 2019 incidence rate was 62.9 cases per 10,000 FTE workers when considering nonfatal workplace injuries or illnesses resulting in days away from work (DAFW), previously reported as 57.3 cases per 10,000 FTE in 2018. National incidence rate was of 86.9 cases per 10,000 FTE workers reported in 2019.
Of the 8,710 DAFW cases in the private industry in Louisiana in 2019, 32.5% of the injuries were sprains, strains, and tears. Injuries to the upper extremities which includes shoulder, arm, wrist, and hand represented 31.8% and lower extremities which includes the leg, ankle, and foot represented 24.9% of reported cases with DAFW to the body. Falls, slips, and trips accounted for 29.9% of the events/exposures of the DAFW cases. A common source of injury was floors, walkways, and ground surfaces with 18.1% of reported cases with DAFW in Louisiana.
