Rain Helps Stop Spread of Wildfires in North Carolina

Rain has helped stop the spread of wildfires in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest that have been burning for more than a week.

Neither the 600-acre-fire at Dobson Knob or the 1,900-acre-fire at Shortoff Mountain, both in Burke County, were spreading Sunday, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

The fires, sparked by lightning on June 8, have not caused any injuries and were not immediately threatening private homes or land, officials have said.

Two months of hot, dry weather had left the area with unusually high fire danger conditions, officials said.
