Cullman County, Ala., Commissioner Wayne Willingham won the Republican nomination for Alabama House District 12 and advances to the general election Jan. 29 against Democrat James C. Fields.
In light voting in the Republican runoff Dec. 18, Willingham received 1,059 votes, or 55 percent, and Cullman insurance agent Bill Floyd got 883 votes, or 45 percent.
Fields, an Irondale pastor who lives in Hanceville, won the Democratic nomination on Nov. 13.
The winner on Jan. 29 will replace Neal Morrison, D-Cullman, who resigned his seat Aug. 31 to become interim president of Bevill State Community College.
With the open seat, the Alabama House currently has 61 Democrats and 43 Republicans. The timing of the special election will allow the winner to take office for the legislative session starting Feb. 5.
House District 12 covers part of Cullman County, including the cities of Cullman and Hanceville.
