Police in Morgantown, West Virginia have a new tool for fighting crime.
City-owned surveillance cameras will be tied in with privately owned security systems to create a new surveillance network that covers much of the city, including the downtown business district.
Police Chief Phil Scott says it may help reduce response times and increase public safety.
Main Street Morgantown, a nonprofit group, gave grants to private businesses willing to install new surveillance systems and share the information they capture.
Augusta Systems Inc., a network technology company, powers the network.
President Patrick Esposito says the system helps camera data converge in a way that makes sense, giving police better information than they had before.
