2 Kentucky Highway Safety Agencies to Merge

July 16, 2008

Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear announced a reorganization within the Justice Cabinet that will make Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement a division of Kentucky State Police.

The two agencies share responsibility for highway safety.

Under the reorganization, Beshear says Vehicle Enforcement officers will spend more time staffing weigh stations along interstate highways and less time patrolling.

Beshear says the reorganization will save the state $750,000 to $1 million a year in personnel costs, fuel savings and other efficiencies. He says it will also increase revenue through fines and fees.
