The Tennessee Senate has passed legislation aimed at making it a crime for adults to host parties where alcohol is available to underage drinkers.
The measure sponsored by Republican Sen. Jim Tracy of Shelbyville was approved 27-0 in the Senate. The House, which passed the companion bill last month, would have to agree to a minor change before the measure could be sent to the governor’s desk.
Sponsors say current law only applies to youths ages 17 and under, but not those between 18 and 21.
Critics contend the bill would enhance penalties for parents sharing a beer in their home with offspring under 21, including those who had served with the military in Iraq or Afghanistan.
