West Virginia Insurance Agents Cancel Convention, Citing Tough Economy

September 28, 2009

The Independent Insurance Agents of West Virginia has called off its 110th annual convention that was set to kick off on Sept. 30 for a few days at Pipestem State Resort.

The association cited the struggling economy as the reason.

“The association’s leadership did not make the unprecedented decision to cancel this year’s Annual Convention and Young Agents Conference lightly,” Gray Marion, the group’s chief executive officer, informed members in a note. “Like so many other West Virginia businesses of all sizes, our association’s membership and their ability to support programming of this type has been dramatically impacted by the downturn in our national and regional economies.”

Marion said the group decided to cancel the event after reviewing the finances and “out of consideration for our loyal member agents, convention and conference sponsors and exhibitors.”

Registrants will be issued full refunds by the IIAWV. They must cancel their own room reservations at the Pipestem.

The association still has plans to gather in Charleston next February for the 2010 Insurance Day activities.
