    Seems like an awfully small amount for the value of a life. Especially if they are hinting at alcohol as a root cause.

    Well, maybe they had nothing but insurance. Can’t squeeze blood from a turnip.

    I agree it seems like a paltry sum, but I suspect the reason is because of the Limitation of Liability Act, which has been aound since 1851. It limits the “liability of the owner of a vessel for any claim, debt or liability” to “the value of the vessel and pending freight.” 46 U.S.C. ยง 30505.
