Kentucky Legislature Approves Christians-Only Health Plan Bill

March 29, 2013

A Christians-only health care plan would be allowed to resume operations in Kentucky under a measure that has passed the Legislature and is on the way to Gov. Steve Beshear for consideration.

The Senate passed the measure 38-0, after it had already cleared the House 88-8.

The proposal would exempt the Medi-Share ministry from state insurance regulations. A Franklin County Circuit Court judge ordered the ministry to shut down last year at the Kentucky Insurance Department’s request.

Participants in the plan would be required to sign a notice acknowledging they’re aware they may not have their claims paid.

Only people who pledge not to smoke, drink, use drugs or have sex outside of marriage are eligible to participate in the plan.

Beshear hasn’t indicated whether he will sign the measure.
