As you stated, Free Speech is protected. We may be offended by what this person did, but your “hope” is a bit over the top (IMHO).

Dear John. I bought my VFW Buddy Poppy today and thanked the vet for his service. Did you?

Interesting, I’m an Army Vet, but no one has thanked me today–not even you.
My comment is about civility, which is really lacking in our world today.
If you’re a Vet–THANK YOU for your service along side me.

John – let me be the first – THANK YOU for your service. And to all men and women who served their country – defending the flag – THANK YOU.

I guess I was just a little peeved by the story; the fellow gets paid off for not suing. But why couldn’t he have simply ‘pretended’ to show his creativity, instead of using an actual flag? Seems more grandstanding than educating. IMHO, of course.

While it may be protected free speech–the teacher clearly chose the wrong place, wrong time, and almost likely, the wrong audience.

Free speech–IE protected from arrest, prosecution, etc by the government.

Your fellow human beings are free to decry, mock, belabor, or otherwise point out you’re being a Class-A jackhole based upon their own judgments.

      Grow up.

      Quit playing the victim.

Sorry Jon you are the one being dense. the point Jack was making (I believe) was that it’s cool now, “progressive”, to be anti Christian, anti-patriotic, anti heterosexual. He’s right in stating the double standard. Atheists and homosexuals scream “accept me” while not accepting you, the Christian heterosexual and probably patriotic, for not being like them. Believe that was the point.

Please “stupid”, you are horribly misrepresenting positions held by athiests and homosexuals. There are no athiest organizations which will not allow people of faith to be members. Many faith based organizations refuse to admit athiests. Gay organizations are also open to heterosexual members and couples. Again, there are many faith based organizations which refuse to allow homosexuals to be members.

Yes, athiests and homosexual are fighting for equal treatment under the law, something they have been denied since the founding of the country. This is not a failure to accept Christians and comments like yours implying that it is are misinformed.

Remember, a militant muslim plants a bomb, a militant christian kills an abortion provider but a militant athiest writes a book.

From the Movie “An American President”

“You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can’t just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the “land of the free”.

This seems to fit in this situation

The 1st Amendment protects you from being prosecuted or jailed, it does NOT prevent your employer from firing you. If a clerk at a store uses a racial slur or foul language when addressing a customer, it may be free speach and he can’t be arrested, but he can sure as heck be fired.

Yes, stepping on the flag should not get you arrested, but it should also NOT be consequence free, especially when done in the workplace. The fact that our society has devolved so far as to actually pay this jerk off for NOT suing is really sad.

The flag itself, is just a piece of fabric, and until someone fashions it into a flag, it will remain a piece of fabric. I applaud this teacher, and his teaching method. He was making a point. What was wrong is that he was asked to resign. What our schools are wanting to turn out anymore are not free-thinking, individuals, what they are trying to turn out are automatons, who will follow the leader without thought and not argue that there may be a better way. I understand the symbolism of the flag, but I also know that it in reality is nothing more than a piece of fabric, nothing more, nothing less.

Well said Secret Agent – we have no idea what the context of his lesson was or what type of idea he was trying to pass onto his students. The teacher could be someone who himself finds stomping on the flag to be an offensive act.
