Miami-Dade School Officers Settle Sex Abuse Claims Against Police Chief

May 22, 2013

Two female police officers with the Miami-Dade County school system have settled lawsuits accusing the former police chief of sexually harassing them.

Cmdr. Deanna Fox-Williams and Officer Yewande Gibson claimed in the lawsuits that former chief Charles Hurley asked them for dates and then retaliated against them when they refused his advances over several years.

Hurley denied the claims but resigned in February when the school system took steps to demote him.

The Miami Herald reported that Miami-Dade schools investigators found Hurley behaved inappropriately but not that he harassed the women.

Terms of the settlement announced last week in open court were not disclosed in court documents.
