South Carolina’s Greenville Health System has settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the family of a surgical patient who died after contracting an infection.
The Greenville News reported that court documents show the health care system offered $600,000 to settle claims arising from the Greenville hospital’s medical treatment of 59-year-old Ella Mae Mattison.
Court documents say Mattison was admitted to Greenville Memorial Hospital on Aug. 28, 2013, for coronary artery disease. She had bypass surgery on Sept. 2, 2013, and was diagnosed with complications March 10, 2014. She died June 23, 2014.
The lawsuit alleged that hospital employees were negligent, resulting in her death. The health system has denied all liability.
Fifteen patients were infected and four died after contracting the infection at Greenville Memorial Hospital.
