A candidate running for North Carolina insurance commissioner was the subject of a fraud investigation by the current commissioner’s office that led to criminal charges that were ultimately dismissed.
Republican Ronald Pierce filed paperwork to run. Commissioner Wayne Goodwin is a Democrat seeking re-election.
Pierce, a Charlotte construction company owner, was arrested in 2014 on 108 charges. Goodwin’s office accused Pierce of being an unlicensed insurance adjuster and inflating hail damage repair estimates.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Mecklenburg County prosecutors dismissed the charges because of insufficient evidence for conviction.
Pierce’s website says Goodwin and his department “put me in jail under false charges for telling the truth.”
Goodwin said Dec. 11 he’s proud of his investigators’ work and that a magistrate found probable cause for the charges.
