Students at University of North Carolina Evacuated from Sinking Apartments

May 12, 2016

Some students at the University of North Carolina Charlotte had to move out of off-campus apartments right before final exams because of construction issues.

Multiple media outlets reported more than 100 students had to move over the weekend after concerns about settling in the Arcadia apartments clubhouse.

Apartment spokesman Mike Evans says engineers determined more testing was needed in one building. Residents were told Saturday afternoon they needed to leave immediately.

Evans says engineers are still trying to identify the problem. Paperwork filed with Mecklenburg County indicates the structure is having problems with sinking.

UNC Charlotte officials say the school is working with students who need extended time on exams because of the unexpected move.

Students had to move out of another off-campus apartment complex in 2015 because of bad floor trusses.
