April was a bad month for house fires in eastern North Carolina.
The Red Cross of Eastern North Carolina tells local media outlets that 184 families were affected by house fires during the month. That’s almost a 25 percent increase over last April in the number of fires in the 53 counties the agency serves in the eastern part of the state.
Executive Director Barry Porter says that, on average, the Red Cross was called to about six fires each day during April.
In Brunswick County, the agency has already helped 42 families affected by house fires since the fiscal year started last July 1. The previous fiscal year, the agency helped 46 families during the entire year.
