A federal jury has convicted a Kentucky doctor accused of performing unnecessary heart procedures on dozens of patients.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a statement that jurors returned a guilty verdict Thursday against Dr. Richard E. Paulus on charges of health care fraud and making false statements relating to health care matters.
The statement says evidence presented during the 7-week trial showed that Paulus performed cardiac stent procedures on more than 70 patients who didn’t need them at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland from 2008 until 2013. The statement says he falsified records to make it appear that the procedures were necessary before billing Medicare, Medicaid and other insurers.
Paulus, who faces 25 years in prison on the charges, is scheduled to be sentenced on April 25.
