Volunteers are sandbagging homes in the Mississippi Delta, as heavy rains push a river toward a record flood.
Pastor Anthony Dean tells WREG-TV that at least one home has already flooded in Quitman County, as the Coldwater River spreads over the county’s flat terrain.
The National Weather Service projects that the river will crest above 42 feet on Monday at Marks, which would exceed the record set in 2016. That flood damaged a number of homes.
Many fields are sheets of water, and people say they’ve been filling sandbags or building barriers for days.
Dean’s church is hosting volunteers, including James Locke, whose home was damaged in 2016. He says a low-interest loan from the Federal Emergency Management Agency financed a small levee around his house to prevent future damage.
