Florida Deputy Insurance Commissioner Susanne Murphy has been awarded the Robert Dineen Award for Outstanding Service and Contribution to the State Regulation of Insurance from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

Murphy was presented the award at the Opening Session of the NAIC’s Fall 2018 National Meeting earlier this month.

With the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation since 2013, Murphy was promoted to deputy commissioner of Property & Casualty in 2017. She has had a 30-year career in insurance, including as South Carolina’s first female insurance director in 1995 and as Florida’s special deputy commissioner with oversight of market regulation.

Murphy has advocated for the expansion of the private flood insurance market in Florida. She has also provided guidance to national partners, allowing other states to more efficiently implement private flood insurance initiatives.

Managing catastrophe reporting and data analysis, as well as working closely with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), Murphy played a critical role in Florida’s response and recovery following Hurricanes Matthew, Hermine, Irma and Michael, which impacted the state over the course of three consecutive hurricane seasons.

She is also recognized for her work as an authority on solvency issues.

“I cannot be more proud of Susanne and her recent recognition as being acknowledged at the national level for such a prestigious award is quite an achievement. Susanne Murphy is a prominent player in our nation’s insurance arena, and we are extremely fortunate to have her expertise here in the Sunshine State,” Florida Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier said in a statement.

In June 1989, the NAIC established the Robert Dineen Award in honor of the founder of NAIC’s Support and Services Office. The award is designed to honor a staff member of an insurance department who has made an outstanding contribution to state regulation of insurance, and exhibits an attitude and performs activities fostering the advancement of the insurance regulatory profession.
