A federal workplace safety agency is fining a south Mississippi plastics manufacturer after an employee lost four fingers.
The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Wednesday that it’s citing Heritage Plastics for violations at its Picayune plant.
The agency says an employee lost four fingers while removing material from a mixing machine when the machine unexpectedly started. That violated rules calling for equipment to be locked in an off position when employees reach inside. The agency also cites Heritage Plastics for failing to train employees or install machine guards. An investigation began in November.
OSHA proposes a $159,000 fine. The company has 15 business days to pay or appeal. Fines are often reduced through informal conferences to local directors or appeals to the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.
