Florida Congressman Steube Recovering After Being Injured in 25-Foot Fall at Home

U.S. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, is improving after sustained serious injuries when he fell 25 feet off a ladder while cutting tree limbs at his home on Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The 44-year-old congressman, in office since 2019, fell from the ladder on his property Wednesday afternoon, according to news and wire reports. The fall was seen by a delivery driver who called 9-1-1. Steube was taken to a local hospital and was later moved out of the intensive care unit.

“Please pray for the Congressman and his family,” Steube’s office said in a statement.

Fellow Republican Christian Ziegler, who is vice chair of Florida’s GOP, tweeted late Wednesday that he had just heard that Steube was still in the hospital, but doing well. “Big relief to hear,” Ziegler said in the tweet.

Sara Nealeigh, a spokeswoman for Sarasota County Emergency Services, told The Associated Press in an email that she wouldn’t be able to provide or confirm patient information due to the federal law restricting release of medical information.

Steube, an Army veteran, was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and has just began his third term. He represents all of Sarasota and Charlotte counties and part of Lee County.

Steube’s presence in Washington may be crucial to Republicans in coming days. The day Steube fell, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had just announced that he was ending proxy voting by members, which suggests Steube will have to return to the U.S. Capitol for votes, The Washington Post reported.

Steube this month filed a bill that would protect military veterans from losing benefits if they use medical marijuana.
