Authorities have charged an Alabama insurance agent, who formerly worked for Alfa Insurance, with more than $600,000 in fraud, theft and exploitation of the elderly.

Bret Chappell, 43, of Warrior, Alabama, was arrested Monday and booked into the Blount County jail without bond, according to the state Department of Insurance and the Blount County Sheriff’s Office.

The DOI released no details about Chappell’s alleged actions, or how the alleged scheme may have worked or how it came to light, while the investigation is unfolding, a DOI spokeswoman said.

Chappell is now charged with two counts of first-degree insurance fraud, two counts of first-degree financial exploitation of the elderly, and two counts of first-degree theft of property by deception. All are felonies, the DOI said in a statement.

DOI records show that Chappell holds an active insurance producer license, for property/casualty, accident and health, and life insurance, which expires this year. He obtained a temporary license in 2002. His business address is in Hayden, Alabama, north of Birmingham.

The phone number listed rang to an Alfa Insurance office. The woman answering the phone said Chappell no longer works there and she could not comment further.

The DOI and Blount County authorities were involved in the investigation.
