Police in South Fulton, Georgia, have charged the president and treasurer of a large condominium association with stealing more than $1.5 million in insurance payouts after two fires in 2020 destroyed a building.
Multiple Georgia news outlets reported that Camelot Condominium homeowners’ association President Bettye Ligon and Treasurer Lyndon Baldwin Sr. received funds from the property insurance company but did not distribute the money to condominium owners, according to police.
At least three of the residents had filed criminal complaints against the condo association, South Fulton Police Chief Keith Meadows said, Atlanta News First reported.
Ligon turned herself in but a warrant remained out for Baldwin as of late last week, police said. More arrests are expected and police are asking alleged victims to come forward with information.
The condominium complex has seen trouble in recent years, residents and officials have said. That includes a lack of maintenance and as many as six murders at the property, news outlets reported. The condos’ insurance carrier was not named in the reports but condo associations in high-crime neighborhoods in Georgia and Florida have reported difficulty in finding insurers, especially liability insurers, in recent years.
