South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has requested a presidential disaster declaration to assist in recovery after wind and hail damaged homes the northern part of the state on April 20.
“I have determined that the situation and survivor recovery needs in York County are of such severity and magnitude that an effective response is beyond the capabilities of the State and the affected local governments, such that federal assistance is necessary to supplement the ongoing efforts and available resources of the State, local governments, disaster relief organizations, and compensation by insurance for disaster-related losses,” McMaster wrote in the request to the president and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The storm system, with large-sized hail and straight-line winds as high as 90 mph, destroyed 16 homes and caused major damage to 12 more around Rock Hill, just south of Charlotte. The storm also caused widespread roof and vehicle damage, the governor said in a statement. The insurance claims have been so numerous that the state’s insurance director issued a bulletin April 22 noting that emergency rules allow out-of-state claims adjusters to work claims, as long as they have proof of their licensure in other states.
If federal officials agree to issue the declaration, as requested by McMaster, it will unlock financial assistance from FEMA’s individual assistance programs.
