Mississippi’s insurance commissioner is reminding policyholders that once Hurricane Francine moves across Louisiana, it will likely bring strong winds and heavy rains to the western part of the Magnolia State.

And residents should be prepared by reading their insurance policies, knowing what is covered and what is not, Commissioner Mike Chaney said, according to local news reports. Homeowners and businesses should also keep their policy in a waterproof spot, make a digital copy of it, and create an inventory of the contents of the structure, with estimated values of items.
Flood damage is not covered by most homeowners’ policies, and it’s probably too late to secure a National Flood Insurance Program policy, he noted.
The National Weather Service has said that Francine is expected to make landfall Wednesday evening on the Louisiana coast, southwest of New Orleans, as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane. By Thursday morning, the center of the storm should be near Jackson, Mississippi.
