Felony charges against a North Carolina insurance agent, alleging that he fraudulently took out a life insurance policy on someone without their knowledge, have been dismissed after the witness proved to be less than credible.
Matthew Jackson Swift, 42, of Mount Airy, was indicted and arrested in 2025. Investigators said Swift had allegedly forged documents and twice applied for a life insurance policy without the policyholder’s knowledge then submitted claims against the policy, according to the North Carolina Department of Insurance.
But this week, a judge in Surry County dismissed the case. The prosecutor’s dismissal form indicates that the credibility of a witness had been compromised, or the witness was not cooperative. The Mount Airy News reported that Swift had been arrested in 2024 on similar charges. He told the newspaper that those allegations were false and were brought by his former spouse.
National Association of Insurance Commissioners records show that Swift is a licensed producer in North Carolina. His license as a broker was cancelled or expired in 2023. He was authorized in life, accident, health and property and casualty insurance lines and last year was appointed with Progressive Southeastern Insurance. A local news report noted that Swift had previously worked with Southern Farm Bureau Life.
