CIWA Forms Young Wholesalers Committee, Heads to La Jolla

By | December 15, 2000

No sooner have the party hats and noisemakers been put away than it’s time for CIWA’s Annual Wholesaler Industry Day. The California Insurance Wholesalers Association will hold its 6th annual event on Jan. 5-6, 2001, at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines Hotel in La Jolla, Calif.

This year marks the formation of CIWA’s Young Wholesalers Committee. “This is new-the Young Wholesalers develop programs geared to the younger people,” said Viviane Furlong, CIWA administrative director. The committee was launched at CIWA’s Annual Meeting on June 15, according to Chair Mike Heagerty, president and CEO of The Gorst Co. “I was approached by [CIWA Executive Director] Norm Levine to chair the committee,” Heagerty said. “The goal is to get more young people involved in all aspects of being surplus brokers from a political standpoint.

The Young Wholesalers have put their members in various CIWA committees so they are learning more about the benefits, the legislation, the membership…The bottom line is that the organization needs energy. It’s also making the older folk more accountable.”

The committee is a good way to perpetuate the wholesaler industry, Furlong said-“from that point we have a pool to recruit from for the Board of Directors, so it’s not always the same people who can get burned out.”

Officers for the Young Wholesalers include President Mark Maucere from London American General Agency, Vice President Bryan Clark from Gorst, and Secretary Jennifer Clark from Gorst. “They had their first meeting as an individual group in Santa Barbara on Aug. 11-it was very positive and well-attended,” Heagerty said.

The Young Wholesalers will be hosting a Casino Night on Friday night, following the Buffet Dinner and Opening Reception. Other activities on the CIWA schedule include continuing education on Friday afternoon, and networking at the Industry Lounge, which will be open all morning on Saturday. Optional activities for those wishing to enjoy San Diego’s mild sunshine include a Golf Outing and a Harbor Cruise on Friday morning. Furlong said they are expecting more than 200 people to attend CIWA this year. “Every year we seem to gain another 20 to 30 people,” she said.
