Idaho’s Department of Insurance is planning to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The Department will host a reception at its offices at 700 West State Street on Thursday, Aug. 23, beginning at 2:30 p.m. The state’s Governor, members of the Idaho Legislature, and representatives of the insurance industry are slated to speak.
The Department dates back to March 18, 1901, when Gov. Frank Hunt signed into law an act establishing the Office of the State Insurance Commissioner, which later became the Idaho Department of Insurance. Since the establishment of the Office of State Insurance Commissioner in 1901, there have been 28 insurance commissioners or directors.
The Department oversees all aspects of the industry in the state, including more than 1,900 insurance companies and 26,000 agents doing business in Idaho.
Last year, the IDI handled 1,290 consumer inquiries and complaints, while assisting in recovering more than $3 million for Idaho policyholders.
