Having captured the Republican Party’s nomination for California Insurance Commissioner with 42 percent of the vote March 5, Gary Mendoza, former California Corporations Commissioner, is challenging his November opponent not to take a dime of money from insurance companies.
“I am honored to accept the Party’s nomination for Insurance Commissioner, and look forward to a spirited and successful campaign,” Mendoza said in a release. “The voters looked at my record and determined that I was the best candidate for the post. I am confident that when the voters compare my record to my opponents they will come to the same conclusion. Garamendi is a perennial candidate, having run for State office five times, and is best known for the $3 billion Executive Life debacle, while I am best known for a $3 billion triumph,” Mendoza commented, referring to his successful fight for the creation of two charities arising out of the Blue Cross of California conversion.
“I challenge my opponent to agree with me not to take contributions from insurance companies or trial lawyers,” Mendoza continued.
“I think it is hypocritical to put oneself in the pocket of trial lawyers while claiming not to be beholden to special interest groups. I will restore responsibility and accountability to the office of Insurance Commissioner and be beholden only to the consumers of California.”
