Fearing a crumbling Huntington Beach, Calif., levee could fail in heavy rain, Orange County supervisors have declared a local emergency and approved $10 million to shore up the levee.
Some 400 homes could be threatened with failure of the earthen levee, which forms the north side of a channel that slices through Huntington Beach near the Bolsa Chica wetlands.
The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to begin the $10 million project to shore up a 3,800-foot section of the levee along the East Garden Grove-Wintersburg Channel.
It will take about 75 days to complete repairs.
