Fire crews are battling a fast-moving wildfire that broke out Sunday afternoon south of Lake Tahoe and that has forced the evacuation of campgrounds, resorts and homes in the area.
Fire information officer Mark Struble said the 125-acre blaze is making runs in heavy timber and is currently threatening the Sorenson’s and Hope Valley resorts. No estimates on the fire’s containment were available Sunday night.
Struble said about 20 homes across from Sorenson’s resort in Hope Valley, Calif. were threatened and that the Alpine County sheriff’s department had evacuated the area.
An evacuation center has been set up at the Diamond Valley School.
The fire broke out close to the Burnside Mine near the intersection of highways 88 and 89 in Hope Valley.
Fire officials have called in air tankers and helicopters to respond to the fire as part of an all-out attack.
