Skiers and snowboarders younger than 18 would have to wear a helmet on the slopes under a bill that has passed in the California Assembly.
The bill was approved on a 49-23, party-line vote. Several Republican lawmakers called the legislation another example of overly protective “nanny state” regulations.
Supporters say raising awareness could prevent head and brain injuries that can end a child’s life or cost millions of dollars to treat, driving up health costs and insurance rates. Violators can be fined $25.
The Senate approved SB105 by Sen. Leland Yee, a San Francisco Democrat, in April. It will vote again on amendments made in the Assembly before the bill goes to the governor.
At least four states have similar laws, and two more are considering them.
