The Nevada Senate has approved a bill designed to give law enforcement quicker access to cellphone locations in times of emergency.
SB268 gives cellphone carriers protections for providing information during certain circumstances. The bill now goes to the Assembly.
In a committee hearing, a Kansas mother described her frustration with a cellphone company when her daughter disappeared on June 2, 2007.
Massey Smith said the body of her 18-year-old daughter, Kelsey, was found four days later.
The family believes Kelsey Smith might have been located sooner, possibly alive, if her cellphone location was tracked earlier and made available to police.
At least nine other states have adopted similar laws.
