Alex Swedlow said he plans to retire from his post as president of the Oakland-based California Workers’ Compensation Institute.
He is stepping down from the helm of CWCI effective August 2025.
Swedlow’s retirement caps a 37-year association with the institute that began in 1988 as a volunteer on CWCI’s Research Committee, then as a consultant. In 1998, he served as the systems architect and project manager for the Industry Claims Information System. Following that, he was named the CWCI senior vice president of research, and eventually he succeeded J. Michael Nolan as president of the organization in 2013.
The CWCI board of directors formed a search committee to begin the task of screening candidates and selecting the next president of the institute.
The CWCI is a private, nonprofit organization of insurers licensed to write workers’ comp in California, as well as public and private self-insured employers, who serve as associate members. CWCI’s primary function is to generate data that can be used to identify and monitor system-wide trends, assist members in assessing their own operations and to analyze key issues of interest to the workers’ comp community and public policymakers.
